Sandals & The Courtyard Marriot Wow WPIC Alumni

By: Tracey Manailescu

WPIC Alumni at the Sandals CSS Training at Courtyard Marriott Downtown Toronto

Well blow me over with a feather, why don’t you? On May 6th, 2012 we had the pleasure of being educated, fed and wowed by some wonderful companies.

84 WPIC Alumni were trained as Certified Sandals Specialists (CSS) by the lovely Lorna Richards, Sandals National Training Manager.  Most Alumni were renewing their CSS certification, while other Alumni got a chance to learn about why we gush over Sandals at WPIC. (This needs to be renewed every year.)

We love the fact that Sandals has added some wonderful additions to their wedding planning packages and apps to make the wedding planning process easier for couples. Sandals/Beaches work very well with WPIC certified wedding coordinators.  Thank you, Gina Tsirmpas for introducing us to Sandals so many years ago…

Lorna Richards, Sandals Trainer

Danielle and I have two places left to visit through Sandals, and those are Antigua and The Exumas.  We have  enjoyed several personal vacations, sent clients, families & friends on personal vacations and honeymoons, we have attended many Sandals FAM trips, and WPIC has held  Conferences at Beaches, Turks & Caicos and Sandals Royal Caribbean in the Bahamas.  I have coordinated a Destination Wedding to Royal Caribbean in the Bahamas where the bride was from Romania and the Groom was from B.C.

Trust me, WPIC, Danielle and myself love the Sandals/Beaches brands.

Erin Pleizier, WPICC, Catering Sales Manager at Courtyard Marriott Downtown Toronto

After the CSS training, Erin Pleizier, Catering Manager and also happens to be WPICC,  along with her team at the Courtyard Marriott(our host venue), blew us a way with a welcome reception that was amazing!  So many vendors were brought in to showcase what they can offer to our clients. There was an ice cream station, photo booth with props, a mind reader, food stations, cupcake station, open bar, DJ, videographer, photographer, decorator, florist and even a prize giveaway of an overnight stay at the Courtyard Marriott and brunch.

We are so appreciative of the opportunities that we were given.  We hope to be able to give back to all of those who participated.

WPIC Goes to Sandals in St. Lucia

By: Tracey Manailescu

Guess where we were last week? On a VIP Familiarization trip to St. Lucia with Sandals!

It is so important to visit the properties you want to deal with, so you can share accurate information with your couples when planning a destination wedding or honeymoon with them. I know the service they can expect, and can help point the couples in the right direction for resorts best suited to meet their needs.

I co-produced our 5th "Wedding Professionals International Conference" at Beaches, Turks & Caicos in 2009, and coordinated a Destination wedding last New Year's Eve at Sandals Royal Bahamian in the Bahamas.

The only Sandals properties I have yet to see are Antigua and The Exumas.

St. lucia51
St. Lucia27
What a beautiful island this is. As soon as the plane got close to landing I was hooked. The mountains, the lushness, the stunning water all make St. Lucia a couples paradise. I experienced it with 4 other females, but I imagined what it could've been with my hubby there, LOL!

We were picked up from the airport in an Escalade. Yup. That's right. Then whisked away to Sandals La Toc with Gravol down the hatch. (Really readers, don't be a hero. You will need Gravol for the winding roads and mountainess hour-drive to the resort.)

We were greeted at Sandals La Toc by our Butlers in the Butler's lounge, who took us to our own 2 level suites. (Mine just happened to have 2 doors because one opened directly out to the ocean!!!) This came in really handy for me during my stay, because I woke up early several days and went walking along the beach with no one else around. That was dreamy, I tell you…

St. Lucia34
So what stood out to me from Sandals in St. Lucia?

The food was very tasty as more spices and flavour were used. We met so many wonderful people through the week, whether they were driving the shuttles, cleaning the rooms, in the restaurants, Red Lane Spa and management. There is a genuine kindness and warmth to the people of St. Lucia. This does not just apply to staff, as we saw with the few locals we met on the beach and on a snorkelling trip. (Yes, the beaches in St. Lucia are public.)

St. lucia48
Sandals really utilizes the location of the resorts and gives you breathtaking views at every angle. We were given the chance to experience Red Lane Spa at Sandals La Toc. (Let me insert here that I have been to Red Lane Spa every single time I have been to Sandals or Beaches. Whether it was for FAM's, two personal vacations, or our 5th annual Wedding Professionals Conference, as I mentioned above.) The experience is always the same… that awesome signature scent of lemongrass as soon as you step in the doors, clean and up-to-date equipment, and most importantly, attentive & professional staff who make you feel relaxed and literally in good hands, LOL! I got a 50 minute "Spa Margarita Mani" and a 60 minute "Spa Pedi-Colada". Oh yeah!!!!

St. Lucia10Differences I noticed between the three resorts in St. Lucia, you ask?

La Toc is for lovers. Newlyweds or honeymooners can really take advantage of the nooks and crannies to steal kisses and they won't mind all of the uphill climbing to get from one end to the other, which is great for the bottom half. For others, you can always get a shuttle which drives by every 5 minutes, no worries! The resort is quieter as well, unless you go to the piano bar to listen to some great music and maybe dance a bit if you are so inclined after 11. *Not best suited for couples with mobility issues.

Halcyon is much smaller and more intimate. This is best suited to couples who want to get away from it all and just relax and enjoy each other. It would also be great to have a larger wedding party here to really connect and spend time with loved ones, or a group of friends that you enjoy spending time with and can really be together for most of the vacation. A more mature couple who just want to relax would be ideal.

Grande St. Lucian was my personal favourite. This is where I would vacation with my husband. We get bored easily and need to see variety and like to people watch. Lots to see and do. More people, in a more lively atmosphere. I am 100% a beach person, and the beach here was absolutely stunning with the views of the mountains behind it. (All 3 had great beaches I have to add.) Free shuttles for tours to downtown Rodney Bay ran out of this resort. Horseback riding right on the beach, and horses roaming freely on the other side of the property was nice to see.

Sandals Weddings by Martha Stewart have made some adjustments, which is great to see. Couples are now allowed to change up the decor so they can personalize their wedding a bit more with the options available to them. You are no longer limited to set packages. Any staff we asked about this, said it has made a big difference to the couples. 304177_10150352926930479_534695478_10184778_1419403_n 312761_10150352947385479_534695478_10185146_7482909_n 318964_10150352944860479_534695478_10185084_3425683_n
We were invited to watch this wedding above at Grande St. Lucian.

A great time with some great peeps! Thanks Sandals :)

WPIC 2010 Year in Review

A Message from the founders of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, Danielle Andrews Sunkel and Tracey Manailescu:

Danielle and tracey speaking wpic

To borrow a line from Master Wordsmith, Charles Dickens: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

What a busy year we have had!  We've had disappointments, surprises, accomplishments and many proud moments.  We've been imitated, (but never duplicated) time and again.

2010 solidified our International reputation and focus of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. Students travelled from Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Hong Kong, St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica and many other places to join our classes and association.  There are now over 2900 WPIC certified Wedding Coordinators worldwide.

In February, we were invited to visit the County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland where we stayed in a different castle every night! We also attended a Wedding Show in Dublin. Read about our Irish Wedding Adventures here, where we profile the various castles (such as Crom Castle, Belle Isle, Lough Erne Golf Resort, the National Trust Properties, etc) and what they offer to couples who wish to wed or honeymoon in Fermanagh.

Tracey and noel at crom castle

In March, we travelled to Bahamas to train and certify 46 people from the Bahamas Bridal Association, which included members from the outer islands, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the Wedding Coordinators at the Atlantis, Sheraton Nassau, Wyndham Cable Beach and British Colonial Hilton Resorts to name but a few.

In June, we were invited to train and certify all of the on-site Wedding Coordinators from Palace Resorts in Mexico.  We brought 10 WPIC Alumni with us to tour the resorts in the Mayan Riviera to see what they offer our clients.Palace wpic certification

All thoughout the year, our alumni were offered opportunities to visit Jamaica, Bahamas, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Mexico on various FAM trips arranged through our travel partners; Sandals Resorts, SuperClubs Breezes, Palace Resorts and Air Canada Vacations.

WPIC was sought out by the Media on numerous occasions to share our expertise and opinion for newspapers, bridal magazines and television shows.  We were also able to extend several Media opportunities to our members at WPICAlumni.

All throughout the year we ran full-page, national ads in Today's Bride and Weddingbells magazine, encouraging couples to seek WPIC certified Wedding Professionals.  To further publicize the accomplishments of our Alumni, we instituted The Wedding Planner of the Month, which publicly showcases and profiles a successful WPIC Wedding Coordinator at the beginning of each month.

During the summer we aquired and renovated new offices with more space to accommodate our growing number of support staff and to better & more efficiently support the members of WPICAlumni.  When we were finished the renovations in September, we of course had a party to warm the offices.

During the year we spoke about Wedding and Destination Wedding Planning at the Wedding MBA Convention in Las Vegas, and several Wedding Shows.

Wpic at weddingmba

We practised what we preach about Continued Learning and we attended wedding and event seminars and conferences in Grand Cayman, Ireland, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada and all over the USA (Las Vegas, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach).

WPIC conference at atlantis

November 1-5, 2010 we held our 6th annual Wedding Professionals Conference in The Bahamas to much Media Acclaim.  Our keynote speaker was none other then Colin Cowie.

WPIC with Colin Cowie and Jayne Hallock

The other fine speakers included: Mary Dann-McNamee, duo Jung Lee & Josh Brooks, Tom Haibeck, Peter Merry, Andy Ebon, Richard Emanuelle and Megan Cole-Karagory.

Esteemed sponsors included Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine, WedLock Magazine and The Bahamas Tourism Board to name a few.

WPIC logoIn order to get ready for 2011, we refreshed and rebranded the look of WPIC with our new logo, added a Facebook fan page and dedicated time each day to uphold our Twitter presence.  We will continue to update this Blog at least every Monday and Thursday, and more often if we have interesting news that just can't wait ;)  Just as we are rebranding and energizing the look of WPIC, we will be putting our energies into refreshing the inner workings of WPIC and helping our Alumni be the best they can be.

2011 is going to be an amazing year for WPIC!

Thanks for reading!

Danielle and Tracey

Only one week until the Conference of the year!

Colin, Cowie, Mary Dann, Jung Lee, Josh Brooks, Peter Merry, Tom Haibeck, Wedding Wire, Andy Ebon, Richard Emanuelle, Bahamas Specialist & Sandals Specialist Certifications.  Oh My!

So much to do and so many great people to learn from!  Producers Tracey Manailescu and Danielle Andrews Sunkel have outdone themselves once again!

With so many amazing speakers at the top of the industry, and attendees from all over North America, this conference is great for any Wedding Professional, but the added bonus of going to four different venues and hopping on a plane for a Wedding Tour of Out-Islands is a Destination Wedding Planners dream!

IncentiveWorks 2010

by Guest Blogger, Carolyne Allen, WPICC of Simply Fabulous

Who knew that a trade show targeted at Meeting Managers would be so valuable for Wedding Planners?  I certainly didn't when I registered.  The only reason I registered for IncentiveWorks is because I have been working as a Meeting Planner for the past few years (weddings is a new direction for me).

So, early on the morning of Tuesday, August 18th I went to my first workshop at IncentiveWorks. Great workshop, but I was still wondering if I should even be there.  Then… I saw 2 familiar faces walking ahead of me. It was Danielle & Tracey!

WPIC Tracey Manailescu, Carolyne Allen and Danielle Andrews SunkelI was so excited to see them; I forgot their names for a moment!  But, I am so glad I spoke to them because I left our conversation feeling very encouraged and pumped to visit the rest of the event. They let me know I was definitely in the right place and it would be great for developing my business. So, I'm going to share some highlights with all of you.

First, I must mention an amazing keynote speaker – Simon Sinek – who spoke on Tuesday morning.  Session topic – “Start with Why?” As I walked into the auditorium, I wondered, “Why What?”  I left thinking, “Oh Wow!”  Here's the gist of his presentation.  We need to find out why we do what we do – right from our core – in order to then figure out how we do it, and what exactly we will do (our “product” so to speak).  So, in context relevant to us, why have we chosen to work in the wedding industry as planners, decorators, etc.?  Why do we put so much time, energy and love into our careers? If you really sit and take a moment to think about it, the answer isn't really that easy.  So, there's your homework…why?  If you'd like more information on Simon and his message, visit

The second day of Education sessions another amazing keynote speaker –  Gary Vaynerchuk  - brought down the house with his hilarious and down-to-earth presentation about the way Social Media has changed the way we must market ourselves.

Décor Trends: We are seeing a lot of leopard print accents; purples, reds, mixing metallics; the roaring twenties, the 50's, pinups, boudoir photo shoots (great for bachelorette parties); lots of bling!  Designing Trendz was showcasing their new mini pancake maker!

Designing Trendz

Destinations:  Many resorts and tourism boards were present, which provided great contacts for Destination Wedding Planners including several WPIC friends and Partners such as:

Gina Tsirmpas, from Sandals

Sandals Resorts Gina Tsirmpas

Debbie Cotton-Burinski from Air Canada Vacations

Steve Koth from SuperClubs Breezes

and Juan Carlos Calderon of Palace Resorts (here w/ Danielle & Tracey)

Palace Resorts Juan Carlos Calderon WPIC

Venues: There were several great venues from all over Canada at the trade show, who were really excited to find out that there were also Wedding Planners in the crowd. Some venues in Toronto that stood out to me are:

The Fifth (formerly Easy on the Fifth) in downtown Toronto. With its rooftop terrace, and several different private rooms, you can get really creative using the space.

Bram & Bluma Appel Salon – who would ever think of going to the Toronto Reference Library for an event? They recently (in the last few years) opened a great event space that is definitely worth checking out.

Berkley Church – what a cool venue, that allows you to byob. And, for small events of about 10 guests there is a tree house that overlooks Taddle Creek.

As of now, I'm just compiling a list of all the venues I really liked, with contact names. The three I've listed are not even the tip of the iceberg! It may take a few weeks to finish, but I'll be happy to share it with anyone interested.

So, if you have not been to IncentiveWorks I strongly recommend checking it out next year. It's great not only for building relationships with vendors, but the workshops are very much worth your while.

Sandals unveils new “Island Routes” at Chairman’s Dinner

Last night, Sandals Founder and Chairman, Butch Stewart held a Chairman's dinner here in Toronto at the Delta Chelsea Hotel. Sandals CEO, Adam Stewart, was also in attendance along with top Sandals Executives, distinguished guests from the Jamaican Government, representatives from various Tourism Boards, Tour Operators, many Travel Agents and of course yours truly, WPIC President, Danielle Andrews Sunkel, and WPIC Vice President, Tracey Manailescu.

The night started with a cocktail reception and trade show, where guests could speak with Tour Operators and Representatives from the various Tourism Boards and Sandals staff representing each of the properties and products.  We then gathered in the Ballroom for sit-down dinner and presentations.

DSC03783The Mr. Stewarts, who spent the night decked out in Team Canada Hockey Jerseys, delivered updates about Sandals International, the Sandals Foundation and introduced their newest product, Island Routes.

Island Routes is their new line of adventure tours that promises to show you the islands as you've never seen them before.  How about 4 x 4ing through the Blue Mountains? Swimming the ocean, on horseback.  Making Rum at the Appleton Estates!  Floating down the rapids in inner tubes! Swimming with sharks. Being up close and personal with aligators as you ride a pontoon down the river.  Eco-tours and Safaris.  Bobsledding or zip-lining through the jungle.  Romantic Bamboo River Rafting with your significant other.  Or have you ever fantasized about being stranded on a deserted island with your honey?  Your wish can be granted for an afternoon in the Exumas.

Thanks to Sandals' newest venture, and 120 tour offerings, you can do it all.

Island_routesPicture 46-1 Island_routesPicture 40-1

As WPIC Certified Sandals Specialists, we are so happy and excited that Sandals is now offering Island Adventure Tours!  It is difficul
t to know who to trust when you travel to other countries.  You worry about the safety and upkeep of the vehicles, the knowledge of the staff, impact on the local environment, insurance and so many other elements when considering a tour.

With Sandals at the helm, you can be confident that any tour they offer will be a superior experience, they will have the best insurance coverage and operator training, the safest vehicles and of course everything they do is environmentally-friendly and socially responsible.  I know this is going to change the way I travel!

5th Annual Wedding Conference in Turks & Caicos

Huge Trash the Dress WPIC in Turks

by Danielle Andrews Sunkel and Tracey Manailescu, Producers

Wow!  What an amazing conference, even if we do say so ourselves!  This was indeed the best conference we've held to date.

Attendees were met at the airport and whisked off to our host resort, the 6-star, Beaches Turks & Caicos, where they were greeted by the Conference Producers, Danielle Andrews Sunkel and Tracey Manailescu, and Sandals Promotions Manager, Gina Tsirmpas, a chilled towel and a rum cocktail.

Later that evening Beaches held a Welcome Cocktail Party, complete with a live performer, cocktails and hot and cold canapes.  Attendees got to hobnob with the Speakers and were encouraged to visit the Wedding Office where the new Martha Stewart Sandals Wedding Collection was being previewed on the Plasma screens.  Cakes and accessories from the collection were also on display.

The next day seminars began at 8:30am.  The speakers were amazing and spoke to both our beginner attendees as well as our seasoned pros, everyone was able to take away valuable info and tips from each seminar. Andy Ebon reminded everyone why they got in to the business and brought everyone to tears with his letter to Wedding Coordinators, Ciara Daykin taught everyone to find their "flavour" of client, speak directly to them when marketing and realize their full potential as RockStar Wedding Planners.  Jo-Anne Brown delighted everyone with her experience and tips from over 2000 weddings in the Caribbean.  She included tips and directives about working with local sources, importing, transport and international Customs and Tariffs. Attendees were able to enjoy everything the resort and island had to offer after 1:30pm, and enjoy they did!

Day 2 started with a RockStar Design seminar from award-winner, Simon Daykin, followed by an educational seminar on planning Destination Weddings from the Producers, Danielle Andrews Sunkel and Tracey Manailescu.  Our special guest and Keynote Speaker, Sasha Souza, wound up Day 2 with a fantastic seminar.  She included tips about business, the right client for you, working with Colour and Inspiration Boards.  She also gave us previews from her new book, "Signature Sasha Souza", due out January 2010.

WPIC Trash the Dress Turks and Caicos

That afternoon, delegates donned Wedding Dresses and took part in the largest known Trash the Dress Photo Shoot.  We had 12 professional photographers and about 50 amateurs on the beach snapping away like a wall of paparazzi.  What a great time we all had jumping off piers, racing down waterslides, floating in a lazy river, swimming in the ocean and splashing through fountains all while wearing our wedding dresses!

WPIC Trash the Dress Turks and Caicos

Day 3 was Sandals/Beaches Day where every attendee got the chance to become Sandals Certified.  Our training was interupted by some furry monsters, Cookie Monster, The Count and Elmo to name names. All of the attendees had a great time getting their photos with the characters and we've already seen a bunch of Facebook Profiles updated with the pictures.

That evening Beaches treated our group like royalty!  The delegates and speakers went on a Catamaran Cruise for cocktails and hors d'eourves, then met their travel companions and were treated to a gorgeous Gala set up beside the French Village Pool.  The night included tons of food stations, beautiful floral and feather centrepieces, live entertainment, awards to Top Sandals Sellers, raffles from over 22 sponsors with a Grand Prize of 5days/4nights at any Sandals or Beaches Resort!  Lucky Lady, Sandra Aaron, was the winner.

Wedding Conference Gala at Beaches Turks
Many new friends were created and several relationships were made stronger.  Each Conference delegate and Speaker got to see how much can be accomplished, shared and learned when people put aside their egos and help improve eachother.  We are all better Wedding Professionals for it.

A HUGE thank you to our host resort Beaches Turks & Caicos and especially Sandals Poromotion Manager, Gina Tsirmpas.  This was by far the easiest Conference we have ever put together and considering this conference was 1,600 miles from our hometown, that says A LOT!

Steppin’ Out: A Guide to the Perfect Wedding Shoes for Outdoor Weddings

When planning an outdoor wedding you have unique challenges and need to consider a lot of details, including shoes.  High heels and grass or sand, just don't mix.  Below we will have a look at some appropriate footwear for your big day.

Beach Wedding

If you are planning to get married on the beach, why not go barefoot and decorate your tootsies instead? Pedicure is a must! 😉

Heels tend to sink in to the grass, so unless you want your bridesmaids to look like the Tower of Pisa, incorporate Wedges or Espadrilles.

Or get SoleMates.  These little do-dads slip on to the heel and increase the circumference of the stiletto heel, so there is no sinking!
